The Liberty Bell’s inscription cites which book of the Bible?
Answer
Leviticus
Answer
Leviticus
The Liberty Bell’s inscription cites the biblical book of Leviticus.
Its inscription includes the words “Proclaim LIBERTY Throughout all the Land unto all the Inhabitants Thereof,” followed by “Lev. XXV. v X.” The reference means Leviticus, chapter 25, verse 10.
The bell was commissioned in 1751 for the Pennsylvania State House, now called Independence Hall, in Philadelphia. London bell founders Lester and Pack cast it, and local founders John Pass and John Stow recast it after the first bell cracked during testing.
The bell became associated with American independence and abolitionism, although its famous crack developed during the early nineteenth century. The inscription is sometimes mistaken for a quotation from the Declaration of Independence, but it predates the Declaration by 25 years and comes from the Hebrew Bible.
