XTC’s hit single “Making Plans for Nigel” came from the 1979 LP Drums & Wires.
Drums and Wires was XTC’s third studio album and was released by Virgin Records on August 17, 1979. “Making Plans for Nigel,” written and sung by bassist Colin Moulding, became the album’s best-known track and helped establish the band as an important act in the British new wave and post-punk scene.
The song’s sharply patterned drums, angular guitars, prominent bass, and deliberately repetitive hook gave it a distinctive industrial feel. Producer Steve Lillywhite and engineer Hugh Padgham helped shape the album’s crisp, spacious sound. Guitarist Dave Gregory also joined the group for this period, expanding XTC’s arrangement into a two-guitar lineup.
Listeners sometimes confuse the song with XTC’s later albums, particularly Black Sea or English Settlement. It was released before either of those records. “Making Plans for Nigel” was also issued as a single in 1979 and became one of XTC’s signature songs.
