The Garbage Plate is a signature dish of which New York city?

The story behind the answer

The Garbage Plate is a signature dish of Rochester, New York. It originated at Nick Tahou Hots and became one of the city’s best-known regional foods.

The dish is a deliberately messy combination of components such as home fries, macaroni salad, baked beans or French fries, topped with hamburgers or hot dogs. It is usually finished with Rochester-style hot meat sauce, mustard and onions, and served with bread and butter. Diners commonly mix the ingredients together as they eat.

Nick Tahou Hots traces the dish’s origins to 1918, when restaurateur Alexander Tahou operated a Rochester establishment. The original version used hot dogs, potatoes, cold beans and Italian bread. The name “Garbage Plate” became established later, and the restaurant trademarked it in 1991. Similar dishes elsewhere often use names such as Rochester plate or trash plate because “Garbage Plate” is trademarked.
