The games "Pokemon Sun" and "Pokemon Moon" introduced what type of Pokemon battle?

The story behind the answer

The games Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon introduced the Battle Royal type of Pokémon battle.

A Battle Royal is a four-way free-for-all in which four Trainers battle simultaneously. Unlike a standard Pokémon match, the participants are not divided into two teams: each Trainer may target any opposing Pokémon, creating a constantly shifting contest of attacks, knockouts, and tactical cooperation.

In the games, each Trainer brings up to three Pokémon but uses one at a time. The battle ends after all of one Trainer's Pokémon have fainted. The winner is determined using a combination of knockout points and the number of Pokémon still conscious, with remaining HP helping settle ties.

The format is hosted at the Battle Royal Dome on Royal Avenue on Akala Island. It is often confused with the broader "battle royale" genre associated with films and video games, but Pokémon's official in-game name is "Battle Royal," without the final e. The format was one of the notable battle innovations introduced in Generation VII.
