The fifth-generation Toyota Supra shares its platform with the BMW Z4 roadster.
Toyota and BMW jointly developed the sports-car architecture used by the fifth-generation Supra and the G29-generation BMW Z4. The Supra is a fixed-roof coupe, while the Z4 is a two-seat convertible, but both use a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and the same basic short-wheelbase platform.
The fifth-generation Supra, sold as the GR Supra, debuted in 2019 after the nameplate had been absent from many markets for 17 years. Toyota and BMW developed the cars together but tuned and styled them separately. The Supra uses Toyota-specific exterior and interior design, suspension calibration and driving character, even though it shares important hardware with the Z4.
The BMW 4 Series and M2 are different models built on other BMW architectures, while the Z3 belongs to an earlier generation of BMW roadsters. Both the Supra and Z4 were assembled by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria.
