The famous commercial port of Sidon is located in Lebanon. Known in Arabic as Saida, Sidon stands on Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, about 40 kilometers south of Beirut.
Sidon was one of the major Phoenician city-states, alongside Tyre and Byblos. Its harbor supported maritime trade across the eastern Mediterranean, connecting the city with Egypt, Cyprus, Greece and other Levantine centers. Ancient Sidonian craftspeople were especially renowned for glassmaking, metalwork and purple dye.
The city’s commercial importance changed over time as regional powers rose and trade routes shifted. Even so, Sidon remained a significant coastal settlement through the Roman, Byzantine, Islamic and Ottoman periods.
