The Erechtheion's porch of the maidens is supported by six statues called what?

The story behind the answer

The six statues supporting the Erechtheion’s Porch of the Maidens are called Caryatids.

The Erechtheion is an unusually complex Ionic temple on the Acropolis of Athens, built in the late fifth century BC. Its south porch replaces ordinary columns with six sculpted female figures that support the entablature. These architectural figures became the best-known examples of caryatids, a term now used for any female figure serving as a structural support.

Strictly speaking, ancient building accounts refer to the Erechtheion figures as korai, meaning maidens, and scholars debate their precise identity and symbolism. Nevertheless, “Caryatids” is the standard name accepted in museums, textbooks and general historical writing. “Korai” can therefore appear in specialist discussion, but it is not the expected answer to this quiz question.

One of the original six was removed by Lord Elgin in the early nineteenth century and is held by the British Museum. The Acropolis Museum displays a replacement, while the remaining originals are protected in Athens.
