The Darién Gap lies between Panama and which country?

The story behind the answer

The Darién Gap lies between Panama and Colombia.

This remote region spans Panama’s Darién Province and Colombia’s Chocó Department. It is a mixture of dense rainforest, wetlands, rivers, and mountains, and it forms the only terrestrial connection between North and South America. The border is therefore geographic as well as political: Panama is to the north and Colombia to the south.

The Gap is famous because the Pan-American Highway stops there. No continuous road crosses the region, largely because of difficult terrain, environmental concerns, security problems, and the high cost of construction. Travelers and wildlife can still move through the area, but it is not a normal highway route.

A frequent error is choosing Costa Rica, another Central American country. Costa Rica is farther north and does not border Colombia. The Darién also matters ecologically: it preserves a major corridor for species moving between the continents and includes the Darién National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
