The Danakil Depression lies within which desert of northeast Africa?
Answer
Danakil Desert
Answer
Danakil Desert
The Danakil Depression lies within the Danakil Desert of northeast Africa.
The depression is a low-lying, extremely arid region in Ethiopia and Eritrea, forming the northern part of the broader Afar Depression. Much of it lies below sea level, and its landscape includes salt flats, volcanic fields, hot springs, and highly acidic pools.
Its unusual terrain was created by tectonic rifting, where the Nubian Plate and the Danakil microplate are gradually pulling apart. The basin has been flooded by the Red Sea several times in the geological past, leaving thick deposits of salt and other evaporite minerals.
The Danakil Desert is often confused with the wider Afar Depression because the names overlap geographically. Famous landmarks such as Dallol and the lava lake at Erta Ale belong to this same exceptionally hot and geologically active desert environment.
