The Coca-Cola Company traces its signature drink to a 1886 invention by which Atlanta pharmacist?

The story behind the answer

The Coca-Cola Company traces its signature drink to an 1886 invention by Atlanta pharmacist John Stith Pemberton.

Pemberton developed the original Coca-Cola syrup in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1886. The beverage was first sold at Jacobs’ Pharmacy, where it was served as a fountain drink mixed with carbonated water.

Pemberton was a pharmacist and former Confederate officer who had become interested in medicinal and commercial beverages. His original formula contained coca-leaf and kola-nut ingredients, which inspired the name. The modern product and its formula have changed over time.

Pemberton did not build the global corporation that Coca-Cola became. He sold portions of his business and died in 1888. Asa Griggs Candler later acquired control of the Coca-Cola formula and brand interests and drove the company’s large-scale expansion. Thus, Pemberton is credited with inventing the drink, while Candler is associated with building the business.
