The Cantarell Field is an offshore oil field in Mexico.
Cantarell lies in the Bay of Campeche, about 80 kilometers offshore from Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula region. It is operated by Pemex and consists of several major fields, including Akal, Nohoch, Chac and Kutz. The reservoirs are associated with carbonate breccia formed after the asteroid impact that created the Chicxulub crater, a geological connection that makes Cantarell especially notable.
A fisherman, Rudesindo Cantarell Jiménez, noticed oil stains on the sea in 1972. The field was discovered in 1976 and began producing in 1979. Nitrogen injection introduced around 2000 greatly increased output, helping Cantarell become one of the world’s most productive oil fields.
Production peaked at roughly 2.1 million barrels per day in 2004 and then declined sharply as the mature field depleted. In 2009, the nearby Ku-Maloob-Zaap complex overtook Cantarell as Mexico’s leading oil-producing field. Cantarell is therefore associated with Mexico, not Brazil, Norway or Angola.
