The Bills used their final pick in the 2012 draft on a kicker. Buffalo selected John Potter of Western Michigan with the 251st overall pick, the ninth and final selection in its draft class.
Potter was known especially for his kickoff leg. The Bills hoped he could produce more touchbacks and compete with veteran placekicker Rian Lindell. He had scored 107 points during his final college season and set a Western Michigan record with 333 career points.
The pick was notable because Buffalo had not drafted a kicker since 1990, when it selected John Nies. It was also a compensatory selection, awarded after the Bills lost free agents in the previous offseason. Potter appeared in nine games for Buffalo across the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
A common mix-up is calling Potter a punter or simply a kickoff specialist. His kickoff duties were important to his evaluation, but his official playing position was kicker, making that the best answer.
