The Błędów Desert is in which European country?

The story behind the answer

The Błędów Desert is in Poland.

Located in southern Poland between Błędów, Chechło, and Klucze, the Błędów Desert is Central Europe’s largest accumulation of loose inland sand. It covers about 32 square kilometers and lies mainly in the Silesian Highlands, within the Lesser Poland Voivodeship.

Its sand was deposited by melting glaciers thousands of years ago. The desert-like landscape was later greatly expanded by medieval deforestation and groundwater changes connected with silver and lead mining near Olkusz. Removing the forest exposed the sand and allowed open dunes and sandy plains to develop.

Despite its name, Błędów is not a true climatic desert: annual precipitation is too high for the strict scientific definition. It is better described as a sandy geographic area or inland dune landscape. Vegetation has reclaimed much of it, but conservation programs have cleared overgrowth to preserve the remaining open sands. The Biała Przemsza River divides the area into northern and southern sections.
