The asteroid 55 Pandora, discovered in 1858, belongs to which main Solar System population?

The story behind the answer

Asteroid 55 Pandora belongs to the main asteroid belt.

Discovered in 1858 by George Mary Searle, 55 Pandora is a relatively large main-belt asteroid orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. Its name comes from Pandora, the figure in Greek mythology associated with the container of troubles.

The main asteroid belt is the broad population of rocky bodies located primarily between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. It is different from the Kuiper belt beyond Neptune, the distant Oort Cloud, and the Trojan groups that share a planet’s orbit. Those populations are often mixed up in general astronomy questions.

55 Pandora is classified as an S-type asteroid, a category generally associated with stony, silicate-rich composition. Its designation does not mean it was the fifty-fifth object discovered overall; it is the 55th numbered asteroid in the historical numbering system.
