The ancient sculpture Winged Victory of Samothrace represents which Greek goddess?

The story behind the answer

The ancient sculpture Winged Victory of Samothrace represents Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.

Created around 190 BC during the Hellenistic period, the marble figure was designed as a votive monument and originally stood on the prow of a stone warship. Its dramatic pose suggests Nike landing in a strong sea wind, with her wings extended and her drapery pressed against her body.

The statue was discovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863 by Charles Champoiseau, near the Sanctuary of the Great Gods. It is now displayed at the Louvre in Paris. The head and arms are missing, but the surviving wings, clothing, and ship-shaped base make the identification clear.

Nike is often confused with Athena because both can appear as powerful armed or victorious figures in Greek art. Athena, however, is the goddess of wisdom and warfare strategy; Nike specifically personifies victory. The modern sports brand Nike takes its name from this goddess.
