The 2026 America250 celebration marked 250 years since adoption of which document?

The story behind the answer

The 2026 America250 celebration marked 250 years since adoption of the Declaration of Independence.

The Second Continental Congress adopted the document on July 4, 1776. It announced that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as independent states rather than parts of the British Empire. Thomas Jefferson drafted the principal text, although a committee and the Continental Congress revised it before adoption.

The Declaration is therefore the historical event at the center of the semiquincentennial. The anniversary does not mark the signing of the Constitution, which occurred in 1787, or the Treaty of Paris, which formally ended the Revolutionary War in 1783.

Although the Declaration is often associated with all the delegates’ signatures, the date of adoption and the later signing process were separate steps. Most delegates signed the engrossed document on August 2, 1776, several weeks after July 4.
