Answer
The Bolsheviks
Answer
The Bolsheviks
The 1917 October Revolution brought the Bolsheviks to power in Russia.
Led by Vladimir Lenin and organized in Petrograd with Leon Trotsky playing a major coordinating role, the Bolsheviks overthrew Alexander Kerensky’s Provisional Government. Their forces seized bridges, communication centres, and government buildings before capturing the Winter Palace, the government’s headquarters, on 7–8 November 1917 in the Gregorian calendar.
The revolution followed the February Revolution, which had forced Tsar Nicholas II to abdicate and created a weak dual-power system involving the Provisional Government and workers’ and soldiers’ soviets. The Bolsheviks gained support by promising “peace, land, and bread,” especially as Russia continued fighting in World War I.
The event is called the October Revolution because Russia still used the Julian calendar at the time; its main action began on 25 October under that calendar, equivalent to 7 November in the Gregorian calendar. The victory led to civil war and eventually the creation of the Soviet Union.
