Answer
Breed’s Hill
Answer
Breed’s Hill
The 1775 Battle of Bunker Hill was fought mainly on Breed’s Hill.
The battle took place on June 17, 1775, during the Siege of Boston. Colonial forces occupied the Charlestown Peninsula and built their main redoubt on Breed’s Hill, which was closer to Boston and offered a strong defensive position. The engagement nevertheless became known by the name of Bunker Hill, the original objective nearby.
British forces attacked the colonial defenses three times. The first two assaults were repulsed with heavy British losses, but the British captured the redoubt during the third attack after the colonists ran low on ammunition. The colonists withdrew across the peninsula.
The battle was technically a British victory because the British seized the ground, but it was costly. British casualties were more than twice the colonial total. The fighting demonstrated that the colonial militia could resist regular troops and helped turn the growing rebellion into a major war.
