That figure comes from the superkart’s combination of a lightweight chassis, a powerful two-stroke engine and aerodynamic bodywork. A typical 250 cc superkart can produce roughly 100 horsepower while carrying a driver, allowing it to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under three seconds. Its published top speed of about 155 mph converts to approximately 249 km/h, conventionally rounded to 250 km/h.

Superkarts are not ordinary rental or sprint karts. They use longer chassis, full fairings, sidepods and rear wings, and many have five- or six-speed sequential gearboxes. Those features let them run on full-size racing circuits rather than only short kart tracks.

The main mix-up is confusing top speed with cornering performance. Superkarts are exceptionally fast through bends as well as on straights: their low weight and downforce can produce nearly 3 g in corners. Some divisions and circuits produce different speed figures, but 250 km/h is the standard headline estimate for the fastest 250 cc machines.
