Sudan is bordered to the east by which sea?

The story behind the answer

Sudan is bordered to the east by the Red Sea. The country lies in northeastern Africa, and its eastern coastline gives it access to this important arm of the Indian Ocean. Sudan’s principal seaport, Port Sudan, is located on that coast and is the country’s main gateway for maritime trade.

Sudan has about 850 kilometers of Red Sea coastline, stretching along a narrow coastal plain backed by the Red Sea Hills. The sea separates Sudan from the Arabian Peninsula, including Saudi Arabia and Yemen, which lie across the water to the east. The coastal region is also known for coral reefs and offshore islands.

The Red Sea is sometimes confused with the Gulf of Aden or the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean lies north of Egypt, while the Gulf of Aden is farther south, beyond the Red Sea’s connection through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. On a map, Sudan’s northeastern coastline clearly meets the Red Sea.
