Stretching after a workout helps to accomplish what?

The story behind the answer

Stretching after a workout can help relax strained or tense muscles.

After exercise, muscles may feel tight because they have been repeatedly contracting and holding tension. Gentle stretching can provide a subjective feeling of relaxation and may temporarily improve comfortable range of motion. It is typically included in a cool-down, when the body is gradually transitioning from intense activity toward rest.

The wording should not be confused with a claim that stretching repairs an actual muscle injury. A painful strain, swelling, bruising, or sudden loss of strength calls for rest and medical guidance rather than forceful stretching. Stretches should be slow and controlled, stopping at mild tension rather than pain.

Research has found that post-workout stretching does not meaningfully prevent delayed-onset muscle soreness, the stiffness that often peaks 24 to 72 hours after unfamiliar or strenuous exercise. Even so, many people find gentle stretching comfortable, and regular stretching can improve flexibility over time. Its most defensible immediate benefit here is relaxation of muscle tension, not faster healing.
