Answer
Philadelphia Phillies
Answer
Philadelphia Phillies
Steve Carlton pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1980. That season, the left-hander went 24–9 with a 2.34 earned-run average and won his third National League Cy Young Award.
Carlton was already an established star when he joined Philadelphia in 1972, but his 1980 campaign became one of the finest seasons of his career. He led the National League in wins and strikeouts, finishing with 286 strikeouts while serving as the Phillies’ ace.
The team also enjoyed a historic year. Philadelphia won the National League East, defeated the Houston Astros in a dramatic NL Championship Series and captured the franchise’s first World Series title by beating the Kansas City Royals. Carlton started Game 2 and Game 6 of the World Series.
He remained with the Phillies through 1986 and became the franchise’s all-time leader in wins, strikeouts and complete games.
