Steve Carell left The Office at the end of its seventh season. His character, Michael Scott, departed the Scranton branch in the two-part episode “Goodbye, Michael,” which aired in April 2011.
Carell had played Michael since the American series premiered in 2005. Michael leaves Dunder Mifflin to move to Colorado with Holly Flax, choosing a quieter personal life over his long-running career in Scranton. The episode was designed as an emotional farewell, although the series continued for two more seasons.
A common point of confusion is that Carell's final appearance as a regular occurs before the show's actual series finale. The Office ran for nine seasons in total, and Carell made a brief return in the final episode, “Finale,” but he was no longer a regular cast member after season seven.
