Derrick Rose was born in Chicago, Illinois, on October 4, 1988. He grew up on Chicago’s South Side, in the Englewood neighborhood, and became one of the city’s most celebrated basketball players. His hometown connection later became especially direct when the Chicago Bulls selected him first overall in the 2008 NBA draft.
Before entering the NBA, Rose starred at Simeon Career Academy, where he helped win Illinois state championships. He played one college season for the Memphis Tigers, leading them to the 2008 NCAA championship game before turning professional. With Chicago, he won NBA Rookie of the Year in 2009 and became the league’s youngest Most Valuable Player in 2011, at age 22.
Rose is often associated with explosive speed, acrobatic drives and the nickname “D-Rose.” Knee injuries, including a torn ACL in the 2012 playoffs, significantly altered his career. A common confusion is identifying his birthplace with Memphis, where he played college basketball; Memphis was not his birthplace.
