Southern Pacific 4449 belongs to which locomotive class?

The story behind the answer

Southern Pacific 4449 belongs to the GS-4 locomotive class.

Built by Lima Locomotive Works in May 1941, No. 4449 was one of 28 Southern Pacific GS-4 locomotives. The class used a 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, commonly called a Northern type, and was designed for fast passenger service. Its streamlined shrouding made it especially recognizable while hauling Southern Pacific’s famous Daylight trains.

“GS” was associated with “General Service” and “Golden State,” a nickname for California. The GS-4 locomotives were oil-fired and could reach very high speeds for their era. They were retired from regular service during the 1950s as diesel locomotives replaced most mainline steam power.

No. 4449 is the sole surviving GS-4 and remains operational in excursion service. A common mix-up is confusing its class with Southern Pacific’s GS-6 locomotives; another preserved streamlined GS locomotive, No. 4460, belongs to that later class rather than the GS-4 class.
