Sofia is the capital of which country?
Answer
Bulgaria
Answer
Bulgaria
Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria.
The city sits in western Bulgaria, at the foot of Vitosha Mountain. Its location has made it an important crossroads between the Balkans, the Danube region, and the Aegean world for thousands of years. Sofia was known as Serdica in antiquity, after the Thracian Serdi people, and later became a significant Roman settlement.
After Bulgaria was liberated from Ottoman rule in 1878, Sofia was selected as the country’s capital in 1879. It replaced Veliko Tarnovo as the seat of government. Sofia’s long history is visible in landmarks from several eras, including Roman ruins, medieval churches, Ottoman-era buildings, and modern government institutions.
A common mix-up is confusing Sofia with Bucharest, the capital of neighboring Romania, or with Plovdiv, another major Bulgarian city. Sofia is also Bulgaria’s largest urban center and its main political, cultural, educational, and transportation hub.
