Skanderbeg Square is the main plaza of Tirana, the capital of Albania.
The square sits at the centre of Tirana and covers about 40,000 square metres. It is named after Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, Albania's celebrated 15th-century military leader and national hero, whose equestrian monument dominates the space.
Tirana's central urban plan developed during the 20th century under several architects, including Armando Brasini, Florestano Di Fausto and Gherardo Bosio. Their work left Italian and Neo-Renaissance influences on the city's central district. The square has since become a major setting for public ceremonies, cultural events and everyday city life.
The main confusion is regional: Sarajevo, Podgorica and Pristina are also Balkan capitals, but their principal squares are different places. Skanderbeg Square belongs specifically to Tirana and serves as a useful geographic landmark in Albania's capital.
