Saturn’s moon Pandora was discovered in images from which spacecraft?

The story behind the answer

Saturn’s moon Pandora was discovered in images from Voyager 1. The small moon was identified in photographs taken during Voyager 1’s 1980 encounter with Saturn and received the name Pandora from Greek mythology.

Pandora is an inner satellite of Saturn that acts as an outer shepherd of the planet’s narrow F ring. Its gravitational interaction with the ring helps influence the ring’s structure, although the detailed dynamics are more complex than the simple “shepherd moon” label suggests.

Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 both studied Saturn, but Voyager 1 made the discovery of Pandora. NASA’s Cassini mission later provided much closer observations of Saturn’s moons and rings. Pandora is therefore an astronomical namesake of the mythological figure, not an object connected to the modern expression “opening Pandora’s box.”
