Saturn’s moon Pandora helps shepherd which narrow ring?

The story behind the answer

Saturn’s moon Pandora helps shepherd the planet’s narrow F ring.

The F ring is a thin, braided ring located just outside Saturn’s main A ring. Its structure is strongly affected by two small moons: Prometheus orbits inside the ring, while Pandora orbits outside it. Their gravitational pulls help confine and shape the ring’s particles, which is why they are called shepherd satellites.

Pandora is not the only moon associated with Saturn’s rings, and it is not the moon that creates the broad Cassini Division. That dark gap lies between the A and B rings and is maintained primarily by orbital resonances involving Saturn’s larger moon Mimas. The F ring is much narrower and more dynamically active.

Images from Voyager and Cassini revealed strands, kinks, and clumps within the F ring. The ring’s changing appearance results from interactions among dust, ice, and the nearby shepherd moons. Pandora’s role makes it an important example of how moons can organize planetary rings.
