Clemens joined the Yankees in 1999 after a celebrated career with the Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays. In 2001, he was one of the leaders of a veteran New York rotation that helped the Yankees win the American League East and reach the World Series. The Yankees ultimately lost the championship to the Arizona Diamondbacks in seven games, but Clemens had one of the finest seasons of his career.

He finished 2001 with a 20–3 record and won the American League Cy Young Award, becoming the first pitcher to win the award six times. He also recorded 16 consecutive victories, tying an American League record at the time. Clemens remained with New York through 2003, later returning to the Yankees in 2007 for his final major-league season. He is commonly nicknamed “the Rocket.”
