Red Holzman won the NBA Coach of the Year award with the New York Knicks in the 1969–70 season. He guided New York to a 60–22 record, the best mark in the league that year.
Holzman had taken over the Knicks in 1967 and built a disciplined, unselfish team around Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, Dave DeBusschere and Bill Bradley. His system emphasized precise passing, defensive pressure and players understanding their roles rather than relying on one scorer.
The award recognized a season that became even more memorable in the playoffs. New York defeated the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Finals, with Reed famously returning from injury for Game 7. Holzman later coached the Knicks to a second championship in 1973, making him one of the defining figures in franchise history.
