Quarterback Doug Williams played in Super Bowl XXII, leading Washington to a 42–10 victory over the Denver Broncos. The game was played on January 31, 1988, at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego.
Williams had entered the season as Washington's backup, but became the starter during the playoffs. He delivered one of the greatest Super Bowl performances ever: 18 completions on 29 attempts, 340 passing yards, and four touchdown passes. He was named the game's Most Valuable Player.
Super Bowl XXII is also a landmark in NFL history. Williams became the first Black quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl, and Washington's 35-point second quarter remains one of the game's most memorable bursts of scoring. A frequent mix-up is confusing the Roman numeral XXII with the 1988 season: the game was played in January 1988 and concluded the 1987 NFL season.
