Qatar is known for producing large quantities of what natural resource?

The story behind the answer

Qatar is known for producing large quantities of natural gas.

The country’s energy wealth is centered on the North Field, a vast offshore gas reservoir shared geologically with Iran’s South Pars field. Qatar began developing its gas resources on a major scale in the 1990s, building pipelines, processing facilities, and liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants at Ras Laffan.

Natural gas is often transported as LNG: it is cooled to about −162°C, shrinking dramatically in volume so it can be shipped by specialized tankers. Qatar has consequently become one of the world’s leading LNG producers and exporters. Its gas industry also supplies domestic electricity, desalination, petrochemicals, and gas-to-liquids plants.

A common mix-up is answering “oil,” because Qatar also produces crude petroleum and condensates. However, the country’s defining natural-resource association is gas, particularly because the North Field is among the world’s largest natural-gas reservoirs. Diamonds, gold, and coal are not Qatar’s signature resources.
