Project Hail Mary is based on a 2021 novel by which author?

Project Hail Mary is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir.

Weir is the American author best known for The Martian, a technically detailed survival novel that began as a self-published work before becoming a major bestseller and a successful 2015 film. Project Hail Mary continued his interest in combining rigorous science with accessible adventure, humor and high personal stakes.

The novel follows Ryland Grace, an amnesiac astronaut who wakes aboard a spacecraft far from Earth. Its plot unfolds through alternating discoveries in the present and recovered memories of the mission’s preparation, gradually explaining why Grace is humanity’s unlikely representative.

Project Hail Mary was published by Ballantine Books on May 4, 2021. The film adaptation retains the novel’s central science-fiction premise while bringing its problem-solving and alien-contact story to the screen. John Scalzi, Ernest Cline and Blake Crouch are also science-fiction authors, but none wrote this source novel.
