Powerglide was available primarily on which General Motors brand?
Answer
Chevrolet
Answer
Chevrolet
Powerglide was available primarily on Chevrolet. Although General Motors designed the transmission, Chevrolet was its principal home and the brand most closely associated with the name.
Powerglide arrived on upper-level Chevrolet models in January 1950, giving the relatively affordable Chevrolet line an automatic option before several competing low-priced brands offered one. By the mid-1950s, more than half of new Chevrolets were reportedly sold with Powerglide, showing how important the transmission became to the brand’s buyers.
The name can be misleading because Powerglide was not exclusively Chevrolet equipment. Some Pontiac models used it after a 1953 fire disrupted production at GM’s Hydra-Matic plant. Pontiac vehicles built for the Canadian market also commonly used Chevrolet powertrains and could receive Powerglide. The transmission appeared in a few commercial and specialty applications as well.
That broader use does not change the quiz answer: Chevrolet was the primary General Motors brand for Powerglide. It was eventually displaced in Chevrolet’s range by three-speed Turbo-Hydramatic transmissions and later units.
