Porcupine caribou migrate to calving grounds on the coastal plain of which sea?

The story behind the answer

Porcupine caribou migrate to calving grounds on the coastal plain of the Beaufort Sea.

The Porcupine herd ranges across northeastern Alaska and northwestern Canada. Its calving grounds lie in the coastal plain around the Porcupine River, including the 1002 area of Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and adjoining Yukon territory.

Pregnant females travel north in spring from winter ranges in Alaska and the Yukon. The coastal plain provides broad, open tundra where calves are born, while the timing of calving follows the short Arctic growing season. The herd is named for the Porcupine River, not for a sea or a species of porcupine.

The Beaufort Sea is a marginal sea of the Arctic Ocean bordering Alaska, Yukon and the Northwest Territories. It is sometimes confused with the Bering or Chukchi seas, which also adjoin parts of Alaska but are not the sea named in the Porcupine herd’s calving-ground description.
