Philadelphia Cream Cheese is a brand from the United States.

Despite its name, the brand’s origins are in New York State rather than Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dairyman William Lawrence developed a rich, soft cheese in Chester, New York, in the 1870s while attempting to make Neufchâtel. The product became associated with the Philadelphia name in 1880 through cheese distributor Alvah Reynolds.

The name reflected Philadelphia’s reputation at the time for high-quality dairy products; it does not mean the cheese was invented or originally manufactured there. That geographic association is the most common source of confusion in this question.

The brand later passed to the Phenix Cheese Company, which merged with Kraft in 1928. Philadelphia Cream Cheese is now an internationally recognized product used in spreads, frostings, dips, sauces and cheesecakes. It is also closely linked with the New York bagel-and-cream-cheese tradition.
