Paul Atreides takes the Fremen woman Chani as his concubine. She becomes his beloved partner and the mother of his children in Frank Herbert's Dune saga.
Chani is the daughter of Liet-Kynes, the Imperial planetologist of Arrakis, and a Fremen woman named Faroula. She is already a skilled warrior when she meets Paul, and she helps guide him through Fremen life after he and Lady Jessica flee into the desert. Paul eventually becomes the Fremen leader Muad'Dib, while Chani remains closely associated with him both personally and politically.
At the end of Dune, Paul marries Princess Irulan for political reasons after overthrowing Emperor Shaddam IV, but Chani remains his true partner. In Dune Messiah, Chani gives birth to the twins Leto II and Ghanima. She dies during childbirth, while her character continues to influence later novels through ancestral memory and, in expanded sequel novels, a ghola incarnation.
