Pandora, the small moon linked to Saturn’s F ring, orbits Saturn.
Pandora is an outer shepherd moon of Saturn. It helps influence the narrow F ring together with the nearby moon Prometheus. Their gravitational effects contribute to the ring’s complex, braided, and kinked appearance.
Voyager 1 images led to Pandora’s discovery in 1980. The moon received a mythological name, continuing the convention of naming many Solar System bodies after figures from classical stories. Its name also creates an astronomical link between Pandora and Prometheus, who are connected in Greek mythology.
Pandora should not be confused with 55 Pandora, an asteroid in the main belt. The moon is an irregular, small body orbiting Saturn, whereas the asteroid circles the Sun independently of Saturn’s system.
