Pandora, one of Saturn’s moons, helps shepherd the F ring. Its gravitational influence works with the nearby moon Prometheus to confine and shape this narrow, braided ring.

The F ring lies just outside Saturn’s main A ring and is one of the most dynamically active parts of the ring system. Prometheus orbits just inside the ring, while Pandora orbits just outside it. Their repeated gravitational interactions disturb ring particles and contribute to the F ring’s complex structure.

Pandora and Prometheus are called shepherd satellites because their gravity helps maintain a ring’s boundaries or shape. They do not form a perfectly sealed wall around every particle; instead, their orbital interactions create patterns, streams, and localized disturbances.

The F ring is especially narrow compared with Saturn’s broad main rings. Voyager images revealed much of its intricate structure, and later observations by the Cassini mission provided further detail about the moons and their interactions.
