Pandora is the name of a moon orbiting which planet?
Answer
Saturn
Answer
Saturn
Pandora is the name of a moon orbiting Saturn. It is a small, irregular satellite that travels near Saturn’s F ring and helps influence the ring’s structure.
Voyager 1 images led to Pandora’s discovery in October 1980, around the time the spacecraft was studying Saturn and its rings. The International Astronomical Union later approved the mythological name Pandora, continuing the convention of naming many Saturnian satellites after figures from mythology.
Pandora is described as a shepherd moon because its gravity helps confine or shape ring material. It works in connection with Prometheus, another small Saturnian moon that orbits on the opposite side of the F ring. Their gravitational effects contribute to the ring’s complex appearance.
Saturn’s moon should not be confused with the mythological container often called Pandora’s box. The astronomical name refers to the Greek mythological character herself, not directly to the jar or box.
