Pandora is one of the two shepherd moons of which Saturnian ring?
Answer
The F ring
Answer
The F ring
Pandora is one of the two shepherd moons of Saturn’s F ring.
Pandora and Prometheus orbit on opposite sides of the narrow, dynamic F ring. Their gravitational influence helps confine ring particles and contributes to the ring’s kinks, braids, and streamers. Because the moons are small and irregular, their effects are subtle but visually striking in spacecraft images.
The F ring is one of Saturn’s outer main rings and lies beyond the A ring. It was discovered in images from Pioneer 11 in 1979, before Voyager observations revealed more of its detailed structure. The ring is much narrower and more active-looking than Saturn’s broad A and B rings.
Pandora should not be confused with Prometheus, despite the pair’s close relationship. Pandora is the outer shepherd and Prometheus is the inner shepherd. Both names come from Greek mythology, but the astronomical objects are defined by their orbits and interactions with ring particles.
