Answer
Spanish cuisine
Paella is one of the best-known dishes in Spanish cuisine.
The dish originated in the Valencian Community on Spain’s eastern Mediterranean coast, especially around the rice-growing wetlands near Lake Albufera. Its name comes from the broad, shallow pan used to cook it; paella means “frying pan” in Valencian and Catalan. Over time, the pan’s name became the name of the rice dish itself.
Traditional paella valenciana commonly combines short-grain rice with ingredients such as chicken, rabbit, green beans, garrofó beans, tomato, olive oil, and saffron or other seasoning. Seafood paella, mixed paella, and regional rice dishes have carried the idea far beyond Valencia, helping make paella an international symbol of Spanish food.
A common misconception is that every paella must contain seafood. Valencian tradition distinguishes paella valenciana from paella de marisco, and many Valencians reject mixed versions containing both meat and seafood as inauthentic. Paella is also not an Italian risotto: the rice is generally cooked in a wide layer and is valued for a drier texture and, when achieved, a browned socarrat at the base.
