Pad Thai is a dish from which country?

The story behind the answer

Pad Thai is a dish from Thailand.

It is a Thai stir-fried rice-noodle dish commonly served as street food. Typical versions combine softened rice noodles with egg, tofu, shrimp or dried shrimp, bean sprouts, and a sauce balancing sweet, sour, salty, and savory flavors. Tamarind, fish sauce, palm sugar, lime, and peanuts are especially familiar components.

The dish’s history is more recent than many diners assume. Stir-fried noodles were influenced by Chinese culinary traditions, but pad Thai itself developed in Thailand in the mid-20th century. It became linked to government campaigns promoting noodles and a modern Thai national identity during a period of wartime shortages and nation-building.

The country of origin can be confused because similar noodle traditions exist across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Singapore. Those cuisines share regional Chinese influences, but pad Thai is specifically associated with Thailand and Thai cuisine.
