On which ship did Japan sign its formal World War II surrender in Tokyo Bay?

The story behind the answer

Japan signed its formal World War II surrender aboard USS Missouri.

The ceremony took place on the battleship’s deck in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945. USS Missouri was the United States Navy’s Iowa-class battleship BB-63, commissioned in June 1944. Its selection gave the ceremony a prominent American naval setting close to the Japanese capital.

Representatives of Japan and nine Allied governments signed the printed Instrument of Surrender there. General Douglas MacArthur presided as Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers, and the document took effect at 9:25 a.m. Japan Standard Time. The surrender ceremony is sometimes confused with the earlier announcement of surrender, which Hirohito delivered by radio on 15 August. The announcement ended organized resistance in practical terms, while the signing formalized the capitulation and ended hostilities under the instrument’s terms.
