On which Portuguese island was Cristiano Ronaldo born?
Answer
Madeira
Answer
Madeira
Cristiano Ronaldo was born on the Portuguese island of Madeira. He was born Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro on 5 February 1985 in Funchal, Madeira’s capital and largest city.
Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean, located southwest of mainland Portugal. The island is known for its dramatic volcanic mountains, subtropical climate and strong football culture. Ronaldo grew up in the Funchal area and began playing football locally before joining Nacional’s youth setup.
A common mix-up is confusing Madeira with the Azores, another Portuguese autonomous island region. The Azores lie much farther west in the Atlantic and include islands such as São Miguel. Porto Santo is also part of the Madeira archipelago, but Ronaldo was born on Madeira itself, not Porto Santo.
His birthplace is reflected in the name of Madeira’s main airport, officially renamed Cristiano Ronaldo Madeira International Airport in 2017.
