On which plateau are the Giza pyramids situated?
Answer
Giza Plateau
Answer
Giza Plateau
The Giza pyramids are situated on the Giza Plateau. This limestone plateau rises above the Nile Valley at Giza, just southwest of modern Cairo, and forms part of the wider pyramid fields associated with ancient Memphis.
The plateau was an excellent setting for royal monuments: its elevated ground provided a prominent view, while nearby limestone could be quarried for much of the pyramid construction. The complex includes the pyramids of Khufu, Khafre and Menkaure, their temples and causeways, cemeteries, workers’ settlements, and the Great Sphinx.
A common mix-up is confusing the plateau with the individual pyramid complex. “Giza Plateau” names the broader geological and archaeological setting; the “Giza pyramid complex” refers to the monuments and associated remains built there. The plateau itself is made largely of limestone from the Mokattam Formation.
The site belongs to the northern end of the pyramid fields stretching from Giza toward Dahshur. Together, these monuments form part of the UNESCO World Heritage property known as Memphis and its Necropolis.
