On which New York avenue is the Metropolitan Museum of Art located?
Answer
Fifth Avenue
Answer
Fifth Avenue
The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
Its principal building, known as The Met Fifth Avenue, stands at 1000 Fifth Avenue on the eastern edge of Central Park. The address places it in the Upper East Side, along the stretch of Fifth Avenue commonly called Museum Mile because of its concentration of cultural institutions.
The museum’s present site was secured after negotiations with New York City in 1871. Its first permanent building there opened in 1880, replacing earlier temporary locations, including a building on Fifth Avenue near the museum’s original home. The current complex grew through many additions rather than being built as a single structure.
Fifth Avenue is easy to confuse with nearby Madison Avenue or Park Avenue, but neither is the Met’s main address. The museum also operates The Cloisters in northern Manhattan, at Fort Tryon Park, so “the Metropolitan Museum” can refer to more than one New York location. The Met’s Fifth Avenue building remains its encyclopedic flagship.
