Michael Kors was born on Long Island, New York. He was born Karl Anderson Jr. on August 9, 1959, and later took the name Michael David Kors after his mother remarried.

Kors grew up in Merrick, a Long Island community in Nassau County. That detail is easy to blur because his professional life became closely associated with Manhattan, where he studied briefly at the Fashion Institute of Technology and began building his fashion career.
