Conversation hearts evolved from an earlier candy made by New England Confectionery Company, or NECCO. The company began producing candy wafers in the 1860s, and the familiar heart shape and printed messages developed later. Phrases such as “Be Mine,” “Kiss Me,” and “True Love” helped make the candies a seasonal tradition.

The candies are made from compressed sugar and are known for their chalky texture. Their messages have changed over time to reflect contemporary language, while classic phrases remain especially recognizable. Production and ownership of the brand have also changed: Spangler Candy Company acquired the Sweethearts brand after NECCO closed in 2018.

Conversation hearts are sometimes confused with generic Valentine candy, but the printed sayings are the defining feature. They can be exchanged at parties, schools, and romantic celebrations, although Valentine's Day is the holiday most strongly associated with them.
